University of Maine Department of Marketing & Communications

I have worked in the University of Maine’s marketing and communications department for three years as a creative media student, capturing authentic content at events, athletics, concerts, and student life experiences to promote the university. This hands-on role gave me invaluable experience collaborating within a professional marketing team while developing strong creative and production skills. It shaped my ability to document real moments with intention and translate them into effective promotional storytelling.

Year 1

My first year working within the Marketing Department of the University of Maine, I developed a plethora of skills in many areas of photography. My work was a mix of delegated projects and freelance work, ranging from student life, event photography, athletic events, etc. During this year I learned technical skills, beginning phases of working on a Marketing team, and learning various equipment types. The passion of year 1 was building connections across campus from science labs, to Witter Farm, all the way to the MaineBound adventure center. Beginning to form connections across campus led to more growth than I had dreamed of.

year 2

During my second year working with the Marketing Department, I honed in on authentic photography-focusing on the candid moments, rather than staged sessions. As the year progressed, my involvement with the team expanded-and I began to develop videography skills and experience. The skills developed in this year jumpstarted my freelance photography career, and greatly advanced my experience level. The passion of year 2 was to grow by learning from those around me. Stepping back into learned environments allowed my learning to take place from others, rather than from a place of nerves.

year 3

In my third year with the Marketing Department, I continued to build upon advanced photography & videography skills, refocus on cross-team communication, begin short frame content creation on TikTok, and learn about catering to analytics for the highest interactions possible. Working for this department has been integral in my growth in various creative routes! Year 3 is coming to a close, and I have spent time reflecting on the interpersonal impacts, campus connections, learned skills, and lifelong wisdom that I will carry into future endeavors. The Marketing Department opened a variety of doors for my development, and I am truly thankful for the experience.
